U.S. researchers said on Wednesday that the substance that makes peppers spicy red has the property to eliminate the majority of prostate cancer cells.

According to a study by the Institute of Oncology Cedars-Sinai Hospital and University of California (West) Los Angeles, injecting capsaicin, an alkaloid found in hot peppers, in cancerous prostate cells leads to apoptosis (cell) that is, piecemeal destruction.

About 80% of human cancer cells of the prostate in mice were destroyed after receiving the drug.

“Capsaicin had a profound effect against the proliferation of cultured human cells of prostate cancer,” said Soren Lehmann, one of the researchers who participated in this study published Wednesday in the journal Cancer Research.

About 680,000 men each year suffer from prostate cancer in the world.
