If it is Quiet and Sociable Will Have a Lower Risk of Dementia

People calm, extroverted and socially active and participatory are less likely to suffer dementia than introverted individuals who get stressed easily (neuroticism) and are socially isolated.

So say scientists at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm in an article published in the journal Neurology, published by the U.S. Academy of Neurology.

In reaching this conclusion, the research team studied the social life style, extraversion (easy to relate to others) and personality traits of 506 seniors that continued for six years.

After that period, 144 of them developed dementia.

The scientists found that stress tolerance and emotional stability, extraversion and social activity are features that reduce the risk of dementia.

In the study, people calm and not easily altered showed themselves satisfied, while those who could not tolerate the stress were emotionally unstable, negative and nervous.

The team, led by Hui-Xin Xang, indicates that more extraverted people were socially active and optimistic in comparison with those of low extraversion, which were reserved and introspective.

Individuals with a relaxed attitude toward life, but with little social activity presented a risk of dementia by 50 percent less than those who besides being unsociable is easily distressed.

Compared with quiet but introverted people, the risk of developing mental illness in individuals with a rich social activity and a relaxed attitude was 50 percent lower.

Scientists point out that previous studies have shown that chronic anxiety can affect some parts of the brain, the hippocampus, which may influence the development of dementia.

The contribution of his research lies in the discovery that an extroverted personality and relaxed style combined with an active social life may reduce the risk of mental illness.

Although researchers believe that these results are “early” because it is still necessary to discover how the mental attitude affects the risk of developing the disease, are optimistic because the factors relating to the lifestyle of the human being can be modified to avoid risk is not the case with genetic
