The Embryo Transfer Plays a Quarter-century

Since the past quarter century, announced the birth of their first child gesture after an embryo transplant, have occurred in U.S. more than 47,000 successful treatments that have caused a large set of laws and regulations.

On February 3, 1984 issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), reported the birth in California two weeks earlier, a boy conceived in the womb of a woman and gestated to birth in another.

John E. Buster, the head of the medical team that led the proceedings in the School of Medicine, University of California, explained that the technique, novel in humans, was similar to that for a long time was used for livestock.

Embryo transplantation is different from in vitro fertilization, and requires no anesthesia or surgery.

In the procedure overseen by the team of Buster, the embryo started to develop was transferred from a woman who had conceived by artificial insemination, to one that gave birth 38 weeks later.

If the process is heading toward a successful pregnancy, the hormonal cycles of women egg donor and transplanted to receive the embryo in her uterus must be synchronized.

In the original procedure, five days after the egg donor receives artificial insemination, “rinse” and if a healthy embryo is grafted immediately present in the uterus that gestate to term.

At that point, the embryo may consist of only 8-10 cells and can be viewed only with a microscope.

The sperm that is used in the artificial insemination in the case that led to the birth of the baby in 1984, came from the husband of the woman who gestated the baby after the second week of conception.

The process differs from in vitro fertilization involves the surgical removal of an unfertilized egg of the woman, in a test tube fertilization in the laboratory, and implantation of the fertilized egg in the uterus.

Buster's team had already made more than 46 transplants of embryos when one of them leading to the birth “of a baby just beautiful”, as described by the pioneer.

The reproduction technique led to heated scientific debates, heated debates on moral and religious values, and processing, along, of comprehensive laws that cover rights and responsibilities of “surrogates.”

For many sectors with religious or moral values more traditional, embryo transplantation was equivalent to “surrogacy,” that is the recruitment of women with the capacity to carry a pregnancy to term for the gestation of the children of others who have lost pregnancies above.

The woman who carried to term pregnancy was achieved with this method had little more than 30 years of age and a history of eight years of frustrated pregnancies.

The use of another woman's son geste for a couple is not new, however, because the Bible mentions the story of Hagar, Sarah's maid, who conceived a child by Abraham, Sara's husband, so that couple to raise.

The difference in the modern era is the transplantation of the embryo in the uterus of a woman to another.

In a quarter-century art has social acceptance, and in at least eight U.S. States There are laws protecting the contractual arrangements entered into between the parties involved in such practice
